The Walking Dead: Season 5
Although AMC’s The Walking Dead has few LGBT characters, the show’s co-creator Scott M. Gimple confirmed in an interview that a gay character would join this season.
“We know all sorts of things about the characters that we haven’t revealed,” he hints.
The Walking Dead’s “Prison” arc during season three strayed from the comics and neglected to introduce two gay characters from the graphic novel. LGBT invisibility plagued the show until season four when the first LGBT character Tara Chambler (Alana Masterson) was introduced. So far, there’s been little gay visibility in The Walking Dead, but I am optimistic for season 4.
Gearing up for the new season, many fans speculated that Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) could be gay or bisexual, but Gimple neither confirms nor denies the rumors. He said, “This is a character who is going to continue to grow closer to the other characters, let his guard down, and let them see just who he is, in every way.”
Throughout the last four seasons, Daryl has been a closed-off character, which has intensified the gay gossip. In the comics, there are several LGBT characters, but Daryl isn’t present in the comics, so his orientation remains a mystery. But, we still have hope. — Levi Chambers
