The multi-story Divas Nightclub at 1081 Post Street has been throwing parties and serving as a safe space for the trans community for decades, in a neighborhood that was once a thriving LBGTQ community. Now, it’s closing, with one last party scheduled for March 30.
According to SFGate, owner of the club and its building, Steve Berkey “is looking to get out of the business” and declined to comment.
The building is listed for sale with a $3.8 million price tag, along with an optional $300k liquor license. The three full floors each include a full-service bar and restrooms, and new buyers should also take note of the mirrored grand foyer, according to the listing.
“We will find another place in the city. I’m working on it,” manager Alexis Miranda told SFGate, also noting that until now it has been the only trans bar in California, and one of three in the country.
Polk Gulch was also the home of city’s oldest gay bar, the Gangway at 841 Larkin Street. That bar closed in January 2019 and has since been transformed into a Kung Fu-inspired bar called Young’s Kung Fu Action Theatre & Laundry. It’s still the location of mainstays like Aunt Charlie’s, still serving cheap drinks late into the night.
